Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how NewsPoint Media Pte. Ltd. (UEN 202547902K), operating the NewsPoint digital news portal at newspoint.life ("NewsPoint", "we", "us"), collects, uses, discloses and protects personal data in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2012 ("PDPA") of Singapore and subsidiary legislation as amended from time to time.
1. Organisation identity and contact
Data controller: NewsPoint Media Pte. Ltd.
Registered address: 5 Purvis Street, #02-01, Singapore 188584
General enquiries: [email protected] · +65 6226 3159
Data Protection Officer (DPO): [email protected]
Our DPO oversees compliance with the PDPA, handles access and correction requests, and liaises with the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) where required. You may contact the DPO in writing at the registered address or by email.
2. Scope
This policy applies to personal data collected through newspoint.life, our contact and tip-off forms, newsletter or membership enquiries, cookie and analytics technologies, and related email correspondence. It does not cover third-party websites linked from our pages; those sites maintain their own policies.
NewsPoint is an independent digital news publication. Processing personal data supports editorial operations, reader services and lawful business administration — not the sale of personal data as a standalone product.
3. What personal data we collect
3.1 Information you provide
- Contact and tip-off forms: name, email address, subject selection, message content, and PDPA consent flag (consent_pdpa).
- Newsletter / membership enquiries: name, email, billing-related details if you proceed with paid membership, and communication preferences.
- Corrections and press enquiries: identifying details you choose to supply so we can respond.
3.2 Information collected automatically
- Technical data: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, operating system, referring URLs, pages viewed, and approximate timestamps.
- Cookie and similar technologies: see our Cookie Policy and Section 8 below.
3.3 Sensitive data
We do not routinely collect sensitive personal data (as defined under the PDPA) unless you voluntarily include it in a tip or message and we need it to evaluate a story. If you submit health, financial or other sensitive information, we will limit use to the stated purpose and protect it with appropriate safeguards.
4. Purposes of collection, use and disclosure
We collect personal data for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances, including:
- Responding to enquiries, story tips, correction requests and membership questions;
- Operating and securing the website, detecting abuse, and maintaining audit logs;
- Sending newsletters or membership communications where you have consented or where permitted under the PDPA;
- Measuring readership and advertising performance when you consent to analytics or advertising cookies;
- Complying with legal obligations, court orders, or requests from regulators;
- Protecting our rights, users, and sources where confidentiality commitments apply;
- Internal training on editorial standards and data handling.
We do not use personal data to determine editorial coverage in exchange for payment. Advertising clients do not receive individual reader profiles from our newsroom systems.
5. Legal bases and consent
Under the PDPA, we rely on:
- Consent: contact form submission (explicit consent checkbox, not pre-ticked), cookie banner choices, and optional marketing sign-ups;
- Legitimate interests: site security, fraud prevention, aggregated analytics where consent is not required and impact on individuals is minimal;
- Legal obligation: record-keeping required by Singapore law;
- Business purposes: evaluation of corporate transactions subject to confidentiality and data minimisation.
You may withdraw consent for marketing or non-essential cookies at any time by emailing [email protected] or adjusting cookie preferences. Withdrawal does not affect processing already lawfully performed.
6. Disclosure to third parties
We may disclose personal data to:
- Hosting and infrastructure providers located in Singapore or, where cross-border transfer is necessary, jurisdictions with comparable protection or pursuant to PDPA transfer requirements;
- Email delivery and customer-support tools bound by confidentiality agreements;
- Analytics or advertising partners only when you have consented to the relevant cookies;
- Professional advisers (lawyers, auditors) under duty of confidence;
- Law enforcement or regulators when required by law or to prevent serious harm.
We require processors to process data only on our instructions and to implement reasonable security measures. We do not sell personal data to data brokers.
7. Retention
Retention periods depend on purpose:
- Contact form records: up to twenty-four (24) months from last correspondence unless a longer period is needed for disputes or legal claims;
- Newsletter / membership billing records: duration of relationship plus seven (7) years for tax and audit purposes where applicable;
- Server logs: typically ninety (90) days unless required for security investigations;
- Cookie consent records: six (6) months, aligned with our cookie banner notice.
When retention ends, we delete or anonymise data unless archival is required by law.
8. Cookies and online advertising
We use strictly necessary cookies for session integrity and consent storage. Analytics cookies (e.g. privacy-oriented traffic measurement) and advertising cookies (e.g. ad delivery pixels) are deployed only with your consent via the site banner. Details, vendor categories and opt-out steps are in the Cookie Policy.
9. Do Not Call (DNC) Registry
If we send marketing messages to Singapore telephone numbers, we will check the DNC Registry requirements under the PDPA and obtain clear consent where needed. Email marketing uses separate opt-in consent. To opt out of marketing email, use the unsubscribe link or email [email protected].
10. Security
We implement administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to a digital newsroom: HTTPS transport, access controls on editorial systems, staff training on confidentiality, and limited access to form submissions. No method of transmission over the Internet is completely secure; we encourage strong passwords on your email accounts when corresponding with us.
11. Your rights under the PDPA
Subject to exceptions in the PDPA, you may:
- Request access to personal data we hold about you;
- Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data;
- Withdraw consent for processing that relies on consent;
- Request information about how your data has been used or disclosed within the last year.
Submit requests to [email protected]. We may charge a reasonable fee for manifestly unfounded or excessive access requests. We respond within thirty (30) days or as permitted by the PDPA.
12. Children
NewsPoint is intended for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under thirteen (13) without parental consent. If you believe a child has submitted data, contact us for deletion.
13. Cross-border transfers
Where personal data is transferred outside Singapore, we ensure recipients provide a standard of protection comparable to the PDPA, typically through contractual clauses or recognised certification mechanisms, unless an exemption applies.
14. Source protection and journalism
Confidential story tips may contain personal data about third parties. We handle such material under editorial policies and legal advice. Where you request anonymity, we assess legal risk before publication and do not guarantee anonymity in all circumstances (for example, if compelled by court order).
15. Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC)
If you are dissatisfied with our response, you may contact the PDPC:
Personal Data Protection Commission
10 Pasir Panjang Road, #03-01
Mapletree Business City
Singapore 117438
Website: www.pdpc.gov.sg
We encourage you to contact our DPO first so we can resolve concerns promptly.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect legal, technical or operational changes. Material updates will be posted on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acknowledgement of the updated policy where permitted by law.
17. Automated decision-making
NewsPoint does not make solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about individuals based on contact form or cookie data. Editorial systems may use software to organise incoming tips, but publication decisions involve human editors. If that practice changes, we will update this policy and provide notice where required.
18. Breach notification
If a personal data breach likely to result in significant harm occurs, we will assess notification duties under the PDPA and, where appropriate, notify affected individuals and the PDPC without undue delay. We maintain internal incident response steps covering containment, forensic review, and communication templates reviewed by the DPO.
19. Records of consent
We retain a record of cookie banner choices and form consent timestamps to demonstrate compliance. Records include the category of consent, date and time (Asia/Singapore), and the policy version displayed at the time of consent. You may request a copy of your consent record by emailing [email protected] with sufficient identity verification.
20. Change log
- 9 July 2026: Initial publication aligned with site launch and PDPA 2012 requirements.
